Great Balance Sheet And Low Multiple On Trough Earnings Make NetApp A Buy

App Inc (NTAP) is a leading provider of storage systems and data management solutions for IT infrastructures. The company's products helps its clients manage and store the increasing amount of data that is generated in today's digital world. We are now entering an era of big data in which the amount of data processed and stored by enterprises is pressuring traditional storage architectures. NTAP provides products and solutions optimized to handle growing analytics, bandwidth and content workloads. Economic pressures are depressing IT budgets around the world which has stalled NTAP's previously robust growth trajectory, particularly because Europe and the public sector are key markets for NTAP. Despite these pressures and significant competition from EMC and others we believe that NTAP is well-suited to compete in the midrange and lower-end storage systems space.

How Pandora, Alibris slashed their data-center power needs

Its no secret that data centers consume large amounts of energy. Between powering and cooling all the equipment found in a data center, including servers, networking gear, and storage, a lot of electricity and money goes into maintaining our digital world. With so much budget focused on keeping datacenters running at top speed finding a green solution is a lofty goal, particularly since few companies will go green if it means sacrificing responsiveness to customers.

The call for greening the world’s data centers is not new. In 2006, a congressional study released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) showed U.S. data centers consumed an estimated 61 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy each year. This usage accounted for about 1.5 percent of the total electricity consumed in the U.S. in 2006. The report also said data centers cooling infrastructure accounts for about half of that electricity consumption.

Key Details on Wii U Storage Solutions

For months we have known that Wii U will support various storage solutions in addition to the variable internal storage that comes with different system bundles (8GB and 32GB at launch). Nintendo has now provided more details on SD card and hard drive support plus even shed some light on how much space the system's OS will take and more. Thanks to NeoGAF user cvxfreak for translating all of the details from the last second Japanese broadcast.

USB Hard drives:

The default and barring an update that Nintendo says is coming in the future, Wii U will only allow one USB drive to be connected at a time. These drives cannot be disconnected while Wii U is powered on and the system will support and read up to 2TB of storage.

Drives that will be used by Wii U must be formatted by the system's Data Management system, meaning you can not use the drive with a PC without partitioning. However all data can be moved internally and externally through Wii U's OS.

Big Data set for big growth

The Big Data technology and services market in the Asia-Pacific excluding Japan is expected to grow from US$258.5 million in 2011 to $1.76 billion in 2016 on the back of a 46.8 per cent five-year compound annual growth rate.

The Big Data market in Asia-Pacific is building the momentum that will deliver a strong acceleration in 2-3 years time. Organisations that start the process now may find themselves with a 12-18 month competitive advantage over those who wait, said Craig Stires research director of Asia Pacific Big Data and Analytics at IDC.

Big Data requires organisations to rethink their technology architectures, processes, and skill sets in order to attain the real value of this phenomenon. Organisations that have already developed an effective business analytics program are positioned to be the first adopters of Big Data technology and approaches.

Active archive software: Not just for the enterprise anymore

Small and midsize organizations face data storage management challenges just like large enterprises. Even though disks are growing in capacity, the amount of data being created, processed and stored continues to grow at ever-increasing rates. While disk-based storage becomes cheaper, facility costs for power, space and cooling continue to grow.

Even for small and medium-sized businesses retaining idle data that is too valuable to delete but too expensive to store on spinning disks is a perfect task for robotic tape libraries with the right software management system. This setup is considered an "active archive" which refers to archive data that's accessible but not instantly available though an active archive can be stored on disk as well as on tape at some point in its lifetime.

More analytics means advanced data management

How companies manage their informational assets could be incredibly important going forward. Storing data has only grown more vital as analytics becomes a corporate priority. According to recent Forrester research, businesses should focus on their information storage strategies, which often end up complicated. The bigger the company, the more pronounced this tendency will be.

The source noted that there are many new software options available to control variables like data quality. Selecting the right one could represent the difference between strong return on investment and confusion. Firms tend to have assets spread over a wide range, meaning finding a way to combine them could be both difficult and important.

There are many important considerations for modern data storage. According to Forrester, that means supporting options like self-service analytics by business users as well as IT pros. It could also include deviations from the norm to meet new regulations.

Review: Surface mostly bridges work-play divide

I have been conditioned just like any other consumer to expect certain things from certain companies. When it comes to tablets, I expect Apple's to look and feel amazing, Google's to seamlessly blend online services such as Gmail and search and Amazon's to have easy access to its online storage.

So when Microsoft came out with its first tablet computer, the Surface, I wanted and expected a machine that is good for work. After all its Windows operating system runs most of the world's computers particularly in corporate environments.

The Surface is Microsoft's first attempt at a general-purpose computer. In the past, it made the software and left it to other companies to make the machines. But to catch the tablet wave led by Apple's iPad, Microsoft felt it needed to make its own device.

Companies think big data quality is high - Experian QAS

According to InformationWeek, the advent of big data storage and management may have given companies some misleading ideas about their own capabilities. For instance, some firms may believe they have the information they need. Despite this confidence, not many have the dedicated data quality sections that could make their plans successful.

The source suggested companies may be neglecting to report issues with their information management capabilities. For instance, such firms will release data to the public but not state important statistics like margin of error. Such careless businesses will have a hard time obtaining the "single point of truth" they strive for.

Cisco Patches Vulnerabilities in Data Center and Web Conferencing Products - Threatpost (blog)

Cisco is warning its customers about a remote command execution vulnerability in its Cisco Prime Data Center Network Manager. The product manages Ethernet and storage networks and troubleshoots for performance issues on Cisco products running NX-OS software. Versions prior to 6.1.1 are vulnerable to remote exploits on the underlying system that hosts the application, Cisco said.

An attacker could send abitrary commands via the JBoss Application Server Remote Method Invocation (RMI) service, which is exposed to unauthenticated users. Cisco said no exploits are in the wild, but there is a Metasploit module that would exploit the JBoss configuration in question.

Data storage: Going with the grain - Nanowerk LLC

(Nanowerk News) Despite the increasing competition from alternative technologies such as solid-state drives, magnetic disks remain an important data-storage technology. They are not only reliable and inexpensive, but their storage density has potential for even further improvement. One method under current investigation is storing each data bit in a single magnetic grain of the thin film of the recording medium, rather than in several grains as in conventional hard drives. Storage in single grains only would increase stability and reduce the magnetic fields required to write bits.

With Increasing Data Needs, Its Management Also Needs To Beef Up - OhGizmo!

We live in a time where data storage is cheap.  A 1TB hard drive costs, what, $70? And this is not even the bulk price.  The fact that its so cheap has a bunch of consequences, the major one of which is that businesses are no longer shy to produce reams and reams of data, all of which eventually needs to be secured and properly managed. Customer databases are ever expanding, CAD files are getting exponentially larger, emails remain in inboxes forever, financial transaction spreadsheets that only 15 years ago would have been impossible to handle are being created on a daily basis…  All of them are critical, but their ever expanding nature makes data storage management expertise an emerging necessity amongst businesses of all sizes. As an IT professional, you can decide to try and tackle the problem in house, or delegate to a company like CDW.
