Finding a Reliable Data Center Provider for your Organization - Blue MauMau

As every notable company needs to store and process large volumes of data, the need for high volume solutions is always there; however, as every company cannot afford to have an in-house high volume data storage solution, data centers are there to satiate the need. Software-Defined Storage for Software-Defined Data Centers - DABCC.com

VMware is clearly promoting this new “software-centric” concept and made “software-defined data centers” not only their new mantra but their vision statement for the future. The industry conversation on this topic is getting louder.

Since its formation, DataCore Software has likewise embraced the need for “software-defined storage” as an essential element to software-defined data centers. Virtual storage infrastructures are the foundation for scalable, elastic and efficient cloud computing. While the primary attention is focused on the computing and networking elements, the major challenge continues to be storage. To make the software-defined data center a reality, we need to overcome the hardware-defined mindset that has stalled the redefinition of storage from being software driven.

HGST Helium-Filled Hard Disk Drive Platform Announced - Benchmark Reviews

GST (formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and now a Western Digital company, NASDAQ: WDC) today announced a new helium-filled hard disk drive (HDD) platform, which is at the forefront of advanced technology for increasing capacity and significantly reducing total cost of ownership (TCO) for enterprise and cloud customers.

With products expected in 2013, the new platform enables HGST to go beyond its award-winning five-platter design, providing a path for higher capacity storage and lower customer TCO for years to come. With industry-wide challenges in scaling current areal density technologies, this new platform allows HGST to design seven-platter drives in a standard 3.5-inch form factor that will cost-effectively extend the capacity and cost-per-gigabyte curve for many product generations to come.

Amazon's Glacier Cloud Service Puts Data in the Storage Deep Freeze - NetworkComputing.com

Glacier provides storage as a service in a public cloud for the long-term preservation of data--the vast majority of which should never need to be retrieved. AWS' use of powerful 256-bit encryption protects the confidentiality of the data. It's the same technology used in its S3 offering, and indicates that Amazon is using one of the data protection techniques that can be used with object storage.

Improved Probe for Data Storage Developed - Overclockers Club

As more and more data is created, more and more data storage is required. This makes higher data densities particularly useful, but these are hard to obtain, depending on the technology being used. One possible technology for higher data densities is probe storage devices which use nanoscale probes to write bits of data onto a material. A problem with this technology is that the probes can fail due to mechanical wear, but researchers, led by Intel, have found a way to address this, as published in the American Institute of Physics Applied Physics Letters.

Though it is hard to say when this tehnology may come to market, the involvement of Intel definitely shows a commercial interest. Also the potential for data densities exceeding 1 Tb per square inch (yes, one terabit per square inch) is likely a motivating factor for it being used in a consumer product.
