Data storage: Going with the grain - Nanowerk LLC

(Nanowerk News) Despite the increasing competition from alternative technologies such as solid-state drives, magnetic disks remain an important data-storage technology. They are not only reliable and inexpensive, but their storage density has potential for even further improvement. One method under current investigation is storing each data bit in a single magnetic grain of the thin film of the recording medium, rather than in several grains as in conventional hard drives. Storage in single grains only would increase stability and reduce the magnetic fields required to write bits.

With Increasing Data Needs, Its Management Also Needs To Beef Up - OhGizmo!

We live in a time where data storage is cheap.  A 1TB hard drive costs, what, $70? And this is not even the bulk price.  The fact that its so cheap has a bunch of consequences, the major one of which is that businesses are no longer shy to produce reams and reams of data, all of which eventually needs to be secured and properly managed. Customer databases are ever expanding, CAD files are getting exponentially larger, emails remain in inboxes forever, financial transaction spreadsheets that only 15 years ago would have been impossible to handle are being created on a daily basis…  All of them are critical, but their ever expanding nature makes data storage management expertise an emerging necessity amongst businesses of all sizes. As an IT professional, you can decide to try and tackle the problem in house, or delegate to a company like CDW.

HP unveils new fast storage technology - Inquirer.net

International technology company Hewlett-Packard (HP) unveiled on Thursday its new Storage technology that has a “Ferrari-speed” minus the Ferrari price tag.Mike Prieto, vice president and general manager of HP Asia Pacific and Japan, said in a media roundtable discussion that HP 3PAR P10000 Storage has double the speed of their closest competitor because of its new solid-state drives (SSD).

The new SSD technology is better than the standard hard disk drives (HDD) because it does not have a spinning disk; less moving parts means better durability, faster storage retrieval, and smaller physical footprint. SSDs however are more expensive compared to HDD.The HP 3PAR P10000 Storage can hold a maximum of 512 SSDs in a single array which “reduces equipment costs, data-center footprint, and energy expenses.

Hitachi targets 2015 for glass-based data storage that lasts 100 million years

Hitachi has developed a glass-based data storage medium that is highly heat and water resistant, capable of holding data for hundreds of millions of years, and says it may be able to bring it to market by 2015.

The company's main research lab has developed a way to etch digital patterns into robust quartz glass with a laser at a data density that is better than compact discs, then read it using an optical microscope. The data is etched at four different layers in the glass using different focal points of the laser.Hitachi said the new technology will be suitable for storing "historically important items such as cultural artifacts and public documents, as well as data that individuals want to leave for posterity."

Data Storage: Cheaper And Easier With Photonics - RedOrbit

As technology grows and components shrink, data storage usually follows suit, with ever-increasing capacities being packed into the tiniest of spaces.Though their needs are drastically different, consumers, researchers and scientists alike ask for the same thing: More available space packed in a smaller package. The rapid advancement in this area has already given many pause to contemplate how a handful of megabytes was once considered precious real estate. These days, the same amount of data is instantly streamed and then forgotten on our smartphones.

Thanks to a new technology developed by Case Western Reserve University researchers, this kind of massive storage on a tiny optical disk could be possible in coming years. With this new technology, optical discs could be capable of bearing the weight of 1 to 2 TERABYTES of data, providing not only an easier and more flexible way of storing data, but a cheaper way as well.

Long way before Hitachi's glass storage chip realizes potential

Hitachi has developed a chip which can store data for a long time but industry watchers note while it has potential for usage in data centers and disaster recovery, its material fragility, usage of laser technology and high costs could hinder it from taking off with enterprises. In September, Hitachi developed a glass chip which it said can preserve data for hundreds of millions of years.

The technology stores digital data on slivers of quartz material, which should can store this data "indefinitely" under almost any environmental condition without degradation, the company's vice president and CTO Hu Yoshida, noted in a blog post.

How To Choose Best SSD For Midsize Data Centers - InformationWeek

One consistent truth we have seen about solid state disk (SSD) is that the technology can improve performance in almost any size data center. The problem for midsize data centers beginning to explore this technology is how to best afford it. The SSD vendors have a seemingly endless set of options for data centers to consider, but which one is best for the midsize data center?

Overall there are three basic ways to implement flash SSD in the environment. First, SSD can be added or installed to a server's drive bays via drive form factor solid state or via a PCIe card slot. Second, an appliance can be added to the network that either acts as a standalone storage system or as a cache for an existing storage system. And finally, SSD can somehow be integrated into a storage system.

Leveraging Intel 'Personal Cloud' for SMB Storage, Security - MSPmentor

Intel is releasing what it calls a “next generation” Atom processor-based storage solution that it says allows small businesses to protect their vital digital data. The solution’s “personal cloud” capabilities offer the promise of helping SMBs keep up with rapidly escalating volume of files, documents and other data that may overload their existing storage systems, in a secure manner.

The new Intel solution, which runs on either an Atom processor D2550 or D2500, provides what Intel refers to as a “personal cloud.” This means the system gives employees secure access to files either at the corporate office or from a remote personal device. Thus it effectively meets the need SMBs have for onsite data access and also lets them extend their enterprise with cloud capabilities. The solution also supports multiple file transfer protocols so companies can share data and content regardless of the operating system.

Hitachi's New Quartz Storage Technology Lets You Keep Your Data Safe for a ... - ROCKETNEWS24

This new storage technology underwent an accelerated degradation test submitting it to two hours under 1000℃.  Afterwards the data embedded in quartz glass was retrievable with no corruption.  Translating these results under real world conditions we can expect this medium to survive into hundreds of millions of years. Conceivably, culture could never be lost again. If this was around in biblical times we could have had 100% intact records with some pristine digital photos of Jesus and his wife that we’re just getting around to hearing about now.

Do Business Users Really Need SSDs, Or Will HDDs Work? - Technology Guide

HDD stands for hard disk drive and is the data storage technology that's been in primary use in computers for decades. In fact, hard disk drive technology has been around so long that it might be easier to measure its age in terms of centuries – as in, more than half a century. Originally developed by IBM in 1956, the very first HDD the world has ever known was about the size and weight of a piano and had a maximum capacity of just 5MB. For a fun diversion, check out IBM's original press release dated September 14, 1956. Naturally, they've come an awful long way since. Like we mentioned briefly above, hard disk drives are pretty much the opposite of solid state drives in that they contain moving parts: fast spinning platters and magnetic heads that write and read data.

Oracle: Big Business Has Big Data Woes - New York Times (blog)

Mr. Hurd made these points to underline the importance of new data storage technologies, like the one Oracle is offering, which, he said, would shrink data storage by close to 90 percent. And once the data is stored, Oracle’s analysis software will be deployed to improve how businesses find and interact with customers, he said.

He also managed a couple of digs at the competition. (Hey, it wouldn’t be Oracle without that, right?) “SAP has not written a line of code for cloud computing; they’ve just purchased companies,” he said. “We’ve spent seven years on it."
