SoftNAS Offers Cloud Storage Management

Storage start up SoftNAS has released a new beta version of its virtual appliance for managing an organization's storage capacity. The software which is also named SoftNAS runs within cloud environments such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) or on a customer's existing virtual servers including VMware ESXi vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V and converts storage space into a network attached storage or NAS like environment. The company offers a free Essentials version that's limited to a maximum storage capacity of one terabyte. A paid edition is $995/terabyte per year or $100/terabyte per month.SoftNAS aggregates disks to create a chunk of storage space which function like volumes or file systems. The program offers deduplicating and other features intended to increase storage capacity and system speed. A snapshot capability takes copies of changed data blocks as new data is saved. It also captures snapshots of specified volumes and file systems at scheduled intervals.

Great Balance Sheet And Low Multiple On Trough Earnings Make NetApp A Buy

App Inc (NTAP) is a leading provider of storage systems and data management solutions for IT infrastructures. The company's products helps its clients manage and store the increasing amount of data that is generated in today's digital world. We are now entering an era of big data in which the amount of data processed and stored by enterprises is pressuring traditional storage architectures. NTAP provides products and solutions optimized to handle growing analytics, bandwidth and content workloads. Economic pressures are depressing IT budgets around the world which has stalled NTAP's previously robust growth trajectory, particularly because Europe and the public sector are key markets for NTAP. Despite these pressures and significant competition from EMC and others we believe that NTAP is well-suited to compete in the midrange and lower-end storage systems space.

Active archive software: Not just for the enterprise anymore

Small and midsize organizations face data storage management challenges just like large enterprises. Even though disks are growing in capacity, the amount of data being created, processed and stored continues to grow at ever-increasing rates. While disk-based storage becomes cheaper, facility costs for power, space and cooling continue to grow.

Even for small and medium-sized businesses retaining idle data that is too valuable to delete but too expensive to store on spinning disks is a perfect task for robotic tape libraries with the right software management system. This setup is considered an "active archive" which refers to archive data that's accessible but not instantly available though an active archive can be stored on disk as well as on tape at some point in its lifetime.

NetApp Launches Midrange Data Storage and Management Platforms

NetApp has launched the new FAS3200 series midrange storage systems. The company designed them with the education market in mind to help consolidate operations onto a shared storage platform. The FAS3220 and FS3250 systems are intended for storage area network (SAN) and network attached storage (NAS) environments. They include native support for high-speed, low-latency flash and according to NetApp, they provide a foundation for highly scalable agile data infrastructure.

They are suitable for virtualize private cloud or traditional environments and a single system can accommodate a wide range of storage requirements from only a few terabytes to more than 2 petabytes. When clustered they can scale performance and capacity across 24 storage nodes, according to NetApp.

More analytics means advanced data management

How companies manage their informational assets could be incredibly important going forward. Storing data has only grown more vital as analytics becomes a corporate priority. According to recent Forrester research, businesses should focus on their information storage strategies, which often end up complicated. The bigger the company, the more pronounced this tendency will be.

The source noted that there are many new software options available to control variables like data quality. Selecting the right one could represent the difference between strong return on investment and confusion. Firms tend to have assets spread over a wide range, meaning finding a way to combine them could be both difficult and important.

There are many important considerations for modern data storage. According to Forrester, that means supporting options like self-service analytics by business users as well as IT pros. It could also include deviations from the norm to meet new regulations.

Companies think big data quality is high - Experian QAS

According to InformationWeek, the advent of big data storage and management may have given companies some misleading ideas about their own capabilities. For instance, some firms may believe they have the information they need. Despite this confidence, not many have the dedicated data quality sections that could make their plans successful.

The source suggested companies may be neglecting to report issues with their information management capabilities. For instance, such firms will release data to the public but not state important statistics like margin of error. Such careless businesses will have a hard time obtaining the "single point of truth" they strive for.

With Increasing Data Needs, Its Management Also Needs To Beef Up - OhGizmo!

We live in a time where data storage is cheap.  A 1TB hard drive costs, what, $70? And this is not even the bulk price.  The fact that its so cheap has a bunch of consequences, the major one of which is that businesses are no longer shy to produce reams and reams of data, all of which eventually needs to be secured and properly managed. Customer databases are ever expanding, CAD files are getting exponentially larger, emails remain in inboxes forever, financial transaction spreadsheets that only 15 years ago would have been impossible to handle are being created on a daily basis…  All of them are critical, but their ever expanding nature makes data storage management expertise an emerging necessity amongst businesses of all sizes. As an IT professional, you can decide to try and tackle the problem in house, or delegate to a company like CDW.

Using Data Storage Management and Virtualization Services - Business 2 Community

Data storage management and virtualization services help businesses to manage the amounts of data that they accumulate. For many organizations, data growth is enormous, due largely to email. Rather than delete anything, we like to keep all of it – just in case. These data storage management and virtualization services are made up of the following:

Storage Area Networks: Connected through fiber or iSCSI interface, these devices house data to increase server and application performance.

Blade Servers: This particular kind of server is a traditional server's processing power.
